This difference becomes particularly interesting when working with feathering: a lighting technique where you aim the softbox slightly past the subject, using the light from its edge rather than directing the centre straight at the subject.
This technique allows you to fine-tune the character of the light, control reflections, and create smooth transitions between light and shadow. It is especially useful when you want to give a portrait shape and dimension without harsh lighting, or when you need to control reflections across the surface of a product. However, the technique places demands on the light modifier. When working with the edge of the softbox, that area also needs to be well illuminated. If the light is mainly concentrated in the centre, the result will be different, and achieving the gradual transition you are looking for may become more difficult.
This is where the combination of Rotalux materials and the wide light distribution of Elinchrom flash units truly comes into its own.
Start by positioning a Rotalux close to your subject, slightly off to one side. First, aim it directly at the subject, then slowly rotate it so that the centre of the softbox points past the subject. Observe how the highlights, shadows, and reflections change as you move from more direct illumination to using the edge of the softbox.
In portrait photography, small adjustments can change how the light follows the contours of the cheek and how smoothly the face transitions into shadow. In product photography, the same technique can help you shape reflections to reveal the material and contours of an object.
It is a precise way of working, where rotating the softbox by just a few degrees can make a greater difference than adding another light source.
The exceptionally beautiful light produced by Rotalux is the result of a carefully considered combination: exclusive materials, light-shaping design, and a studio flash that distributes light effectively throughout the softbox.
Together, Elinchrom and Rotalux allow you to work with the entire illuminated surface – and discover just how much you can vary the light by making full use of the softbox's surface.
