To achieve the best results with a mist filter, ensure you have suitable lighting conditions. Key elements like backlighting, highlights, and specular highlights should be present. Begin with a modest filter strength of ¼ and gradually increase it.
The effectiveness of the mist filter is influenced by your aperture choice, so select the aperture carefully and avoid using one that is too wide. For instance, a maximum aperture of f/11 at 50mm/FF or f/5.6 at 28mm/FF works well. Telephoto lenses starting at 85mm/FF are less sensitive to this. Overly stopping down the lens can result in the filter's effect becoming too pronounced due to a larger depth of field, especially in cameras with smaller sensors.
Mist filters do not necessitate a longer exposure time. However, it’s better to lean towards a slightly longer exposure rather than a shorter one. Depending on your preference, an exposure compensation of +1/3 to +1/2 stop is advisable. To find the optimal exposure, it’s helpful to take a series of photos with varying exposure settings.
