Variable ND filter | B+W Filter

Variable ND Filters from B+W Filter and Schneider-Kreuznach

Gray filter with continuous adjustment of density. ND filters are used to reduce the amount of light reaching the camera to give the photographer the ability to choose a longer shutter speed or smaller aperture and thereby achieve the desired image result. An adjustable gray filter can be continuously rotated to the desired density, a very popular filter for movie photographers and nature photographers.

Learn More About ND Filters

Reduce the amount of light passing through your camera lens by using an ND filter. This type of filter can be used to prevent overexposure when filming scenes with very bright light and gives the photographer the ability to choose a larger aperture on the lens to achieve a short depth of field. For still photography, the gray filter allows the photographer to choose a longer shutter speed to create dramatic motion blur.

How Gray Filters Work

An ND filter acts like a pair of sunglasses, simply blocking some of the light from reaching the camera. B+W ND filters are color neutral, meaning the filter lowers the intensity of all wavelengths of light. The colors of the subject will be naturally reproduced in the pictures.

ND Filters Available in Different Densities

B+W ND filters are available in different densities with the difference in how many f-stops of light the filter blocks. This can be indicated in various ways as follows.

Type Optical DensityF-StopsFilter FactorLV%
102802ND 0.6+24 x-225
103803ND 0.9+38 x-312.5
106806ND 1.8+664 x-61.6
110810ND 3.0101,000 x-10 0.1

ND Filter with Variable Density

There are ND filters that can be continuously set in density, how many f-stops of light the filter should block. This type of variable gray filter is very popular among movie photographers who then get an extra "aperture" to work with. The adjustable gray filter also has great advantages in still photography as it provides several filter functions from the same filter and allows for precise selection of the desired combination of aperture and shutter speed

B+W Filter Authorized Distributor

For more than 90 years, B+W filters have been synonymous with quality and innovation. B+W has succeeded in establishing itself as one of the world‘s leading filter manufacturers. B+W ND Vario 52mm XS-Pro Digital MRC Nano
1075246

B+W Vario ND Filter XS-Pro MRC Nano 52 mm. Flexible light control without changing filters: Because of its effect the B+W Vario ND filter can be adapted to a wide range of shooting situations and photographic requirements. Portrait photographers need for example even in bright ambient light, large apertures in order to optically separate the subject from the background. Using extremely long exposure times, architectural photographers can make people passing through the subject “invisible”. In landscape photography flowing water or the sea surface in broad daylight appears fluffy and soft when using long exposure times. Due to the long time exposure the adventurous photographer achieves a more dynamic image composition by motion blur. Working always with a fixed exposure time on a shootthe film technique often uses variable ND filters. For lenses with insufficient stopping down possibilities, especially in bright light, a variable ND filter allows matched exposure values.

Adjustable density

Thanks to its steplessly adjustable density control, the B+W Vario ND filter can be exactly adapted to individual requirements. For this purpose it comes with an index setting, allowing the photographer to set the density between +1 and +5 f-stops. The filter is optimally colour-neutral and guarantees a professional image performance without abberations. The Vario ND filter can be combined with further ND filters of fixed ND values, leading to considerably higher density values.

B+W ND Vario ND Filter

Features

  • Steplessly controlled density (from +1 to +5 f-stops)
  • Two polarizing filters in one holder
  • Optically exact image (no cross image)
  • No colour shift

B+W Vario ND Filter XS-Pro MRC Nano 82 mm.

Schneider Cine Filter True-Match Vari-ND 77mm
1105442

The True-Match Vari-ND® MKII filter is our most neutral variable ND filter to date and features 1.5 to 11.5 stops of light control. These True-Match Vari-ND® MKII filters each feature low profiles, smooth rotating rings, and clear marks for choosing strengths while shooting. The effect is achieved by stacking highly neutral grey polarizing filters within a filter cell and rotating them to block the desired amount of light.

Despite its double-frame structure, the Schneider Vari-ND® MKII employs a slim 5.9 mm profile to prevent vignetting.

The True-Match Vari-ND® MKII, with 10 stops of light blocking power, eliminates the need for purchasing and stacking multiple ND filters.

Features

  • 1.5 to 11.5 stops of exposure control
  • Slim profile, lightweight, & smooth rotating design
  • Create soft backgrounds and slow shutter effects
  • Reduce overall brightness and exposure on the fly

Specifications

  • Filter Type: Variable Neutral Density (VND)
  • Density: 0.45 (1.5 stops ) to 3.45 (11.5 stops)
