How to Hang Paper Backgrounds

The best support for Background Paper

How to handle and hang background paper in the best way.

How to Hang Seamless Paper Backgrounds

If you've just discovered the benefits of using background paper for photo backdrops or video backgrounds but haven't yet looked at the options for easily hanging the paper background, here is a guide with various solutions. We show the available hanging options and how to handle the background paper in the best way.

How to Open Seamless Paper Rolls

Colorama and Manfrotto background papers are delivered rolled up on a strong paper core, packed in a plastic bag and corrugated cardboard. Place the box on a flat surface and pull out the background paper and remove the plastic.

The paper roll is taped at delivery to protect it from unrolling. Insert the boom into the roll if you are using a background stand, or insert expanders and tighten them before the tape.
Before hoisting the background paper on the stands or fixing it in its wall/ceiling mount, carefully use a sharp knife to remove the tape. Make sure to only cut the tape.

Background Stand - Set with Stand and Boom

If you want to temporarily hang the background paper roll in a place, or the location is not suitable for wall/ceiling mounting, a background stand set is a good solution. The stand set is compact for transport and storage and is easy to set up on site. The set consists of a telescopic boom, which can be adjusted to a width of up to 298cm, and two sturdy light stands.
Beware of cheap stand variants! There are several types of background stands on the market, but when you choose Manfrotto, you get a stand set that is designed to carry the over 7 kg heavy paper roll (weight for a 2.72x11m roll).

Backdrop Stand

If you often work alone, we recommend choosing the Manfrotto Solo background stand set. The advantage of this set is that the boom is mounted on an articulated holder, making it easier to raise the paper roll to the desired photography level.

When you roll out the paper to the desired length, the roll must be locked in position so that not too much paper is rolled out. Either use a strong clamp for this or install Colorama's smart Paper Brake in the paper core. With Colorama Paper Brake, the paper stops at the length you have rolled out.

Manfrotto Background Support

A background paper roll weighs just over 7 kg, and for a standing full-body portrait, the roll should be hoisted to about 2.3 meters to avoid it appearing in the picture. This makes the stand set heavy at the top, therefore we recommend that sandbags or other weights are placed at the bottom of the stands.

Use a C-stand with Boom as Background Stand

For background paper with a width of 1.35 meters, one stand is enough, if you choose a sturdy stand. The Avenger C-stand with boom works excellently as a holder for the paper roll. Make sure to lock the roll with a clamp when you have pulled out the desired length.

Hanging Background Paper on Wall or Ceiling

If you're looking for a permanent mounting solution for background paper rolls that you will use frequently, wall mounting systems for backgrounds are an excellent way to store often-used rolls of paper backgrounds and keep your studio from becoming cluttered. The installation involves inserting expanders at each end of the background core and attaching them to a bracket on the wall or ceiling. The expandable inserts can be locked to the desired tightness and make it easy to roll the paper out and up.
Chains attached to each roll make it easy to lower and raise a paper roll for the photo session.

When using wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted background paper, we recommend that weight is mounted at the end of the paper. The weight makes it easier to roll out the paper and keeps the paper in place on the floor when it's rolled out.

Taping Background Paper to the Wall

If you are looking for an inexpensive background solution, background paper is an excellent option. You have a multitude of colors to choose from and you can easily cut a piece of the paper and simply tape or pin the background to the wall when you need a quick solution.

Tape or Pin to the Wall

If you want to reuse the paper, you can place the roll next to the wall and pull the paper up to the desired height and then tape the end of the paper. This method works great for portraits up to half-body.
After the photo shoot, you can roll the paper back up and reuse it.
