Neutral Density Filter, ND-Filter (Gray filter) is used to reduce the amount of light reaching the camera's sensor, which allows the photographer to select the desired combination of aperture and shutter speed. B+W Neutral Density Filters attenuate the light by 1,2,3,6 or 10 f-stops. This is beneficial to achieve the correct exposure when the brightness of the subject is still too high for the fastes shutter speed and the smallest aperture, or for that "cotton candy" look to streams and waterfalls.
With a light reduction of ten f-stops, this ND filter delivers a further intensification compared with the B+W ND 106. Running water virtually transforms into mist. People walking on streets become blurred and indistinct or even invisible. In some cases this involves extremely long exposures of up to one minute. A stable tripod is essential.
With the thin-film technology developed here, not only the pure ND filter effect comes into play, but a coating combination optimizes the ND filter. In addition to the filter effect, the coating combination contains a multi-layer anti-reflective component with 7 layers per filter side to prevent annoying reflections. An outer layer with the usual dirt- and water-repellent properties is applied as the final layer. This not only provides all-around protection for the filter, but also makes it easy to clean and maintain the filter pane. The light attenuation itself is very uniform over the entire visible range and produces optimally color-neutral image results.
For beginners it can be a challenge to achieve optimal results with ND Filters at first. There are a few things to consider and often it is necessary to maintain perfect conditions over a longer period. With these tips, you’ll have everything you need to get fantastic shots right from the very beginning!
For more than 90 years, B+W filters have been synonymous with quality and innovation. B+W has succeeded in establishing itself as one of the world‘s leading filter manufacturers. It has, for example, made decisive progress in surface coating. B+W is the first filter manufacturer in the world to offer MRC (Multi Resistant Coating). MRC nano coating is the most innovative development in thin-layer technology. The world-famous Käsemann type polarizing filter with its outstanding quality has been produced by B+W since 1989.
