Manfrotto HiLite gives you the opportunity to quickly and easily create stylish portraits with a white or black background. John Hagby shows you how.
The HiLite backgrounds from Manfrotto function as large light boxes thanks to the light from studio flashes being pushed in from the sides. It provides even lighting over the entire large area, which means that HiLite can be used both as an exposed background or as a softbox as it can create a nice window light.
For this image, John uses only one headlight, Elinchrom ELC 500 with Octa softbox, and a Manfrotto HaloCompact reflective screen. HiLite is equipped with two ELC 500s to give evenness to the entire surface. Two black side walls dampen the reflection from the lighting.
The result is a very nice portrait light with a white background that exposes the subject.
Black background in portrait photography can often cause problems because the subject "melts" into the background, especially if the model has dark or black clothes. John solves this in an ingeniously simple way. By partially covering the HiLite background with black background paper and leaving the outer edges free, the light from HiLite will give the model a light, nice edge light that frees the model's profile from the black background. The headlight also comes in this photography from an Octa softbox and the reflective screen and stray light are dimmed with black side walls.
