Guide Dance Photography | John Hagby

Mastering Ballet Photography: Essential Tips for Capturing Graceful Dancers

Is it easy to photograph ballet? It probably depends on what you mean… Photographing dancers picks up certain parts of the creative process that you may not be used to when photographing a product or portrait photography. Dive into the art of ballet photography. Discover key techniques for capturing the elegance and dynamism of ballet dancers, and learn how to overcome the unique challenges of this creative photography niche.

By John Hagby

The first is that all of a sudden we are working with an object that is moving. This can affect the sharpness more or less clearly in the image depending on the capacity of your equipment. In the studio, I generally use the flash's burn time to freeze a movement, which means that I need flashes that have that property.

Photo John Hagby - Ballet dancer Emma Nilsson

The faster the object moves, the shorter flash duration is needed. Some flashes can handle flash duration down to 1/20000 sec or shorter. What you should keep in mind, however, is that this quality is usually when the flash is set to the lowest output, which means that the flash will not be useful when I photograph dancers.
For this photography I need to put the flash a little further away from the subject and also I need a depth of field that gives "room" when the dancer moves, after which I have to compensate the smaller aperture with more power from the flash.

Photo John Hagby - Ballet dancer Emma Nilsson

Another thing that comes into play is whether I should take a series of pictures per pose or if I should try to find the pose we are looking for when we take the picture. A good dancer can repeat the same movement over and over again and then it is up to me as a photographer to time the right moment.

Photo John Hagby - Ballet dancer Emma Nilsson

I always shoot tethered into the computer which is connected to a large 55 ”screen where all images are displayed. This means that I (who honestly do not know much about dance bags and how each joint should be, stretched or twisted) can discuss details from a picture and for my part also get advice on what to look for when I press the shutter button .

I would rather try to time a frame than shoot a lot of pictures in series and maybe get the pose perfect between 2 flashes. Thanks to the fact that I photograph into the computer, it becomes easy for me and the dancer to find details that can be improved and work together with expressions and feelings that we both like and that the dancer also feels proud of.

Photo John Hagby - Ballet dancer Emma Nilsson

Believe me, there are many "no no" when it comes to dance bags. Sometimes we break the "rules" for how stretch and poses should be in favor of the creative expression and sometimes we nerd in small little details to make it right.

Photo John Hagby - Ballet dancer Emma Nilsson

I believe that dance is a practice of art. Then it is a good idea to use a mix of light inspired by Nude Art and Stage Light on a dance stage.
This time it was 1 Rotalux Recta 90x110 cm softbox that sat on a boom stand over the model and 2 Rotalux Striplight 50x130 cm softboxes equipped with Hooded Diffuser (grid on the softbox had also worked this case).

PictPro Studio

My striplight softboxes were used from the side and were in the same Skyport group so I could easily raise and lower the light on the group and maintain the evenness in effect between the 2 light sources.

I put my headlight (90x110 cm) in a separate group and in this way I could easily control everything from Transmitter Pro and work with only headlights or side lights and of course run all lights together if I wanted. I alternated with white and gray background (Colorama Smoke gray).

Together with 2 Elinchrom ELC 1000 Pro HD and an ELC 500, this photography went like a dance… .;)

Elinchrom ELC Pro HD 1000 To Go Set
topseller-icon.png
EL-20663.2.EU

High power, short flash durations and consistent performance for demanding studio productions. The Elinchrom ELC Pro HD 1000 is built for photographers who need plenty of light while working quickly and precisely. With up to 1000 Ws, fast recycling and short flash durations, it gives you control over everything from carefully lit portraits and product images to fashion and fast-moving subjects.

The wide power range provides flexibility as your lighting setup changes, while consistent output and colour temperature help you maintain uniform results throughout the shoot.

  • Fast recycling – as little as 1.2 s at full power
  • Short flash duration – as short as 1/5260 s
  • Wide power range spanning 8 stops
  • Consistent output and colour temperature
  • Designed for long sessions and high-volume shooting

Complete set with two ELC Pro HD 1000 units

The ELC Pro HD 1000 To Go Set includes two 1000 Ws flash units and a Skyport Transmitter Plus for wireless control. The equipment comes in a compact carrying bag with a handle and shoulder strap.

Two flash units give you a flexible starting point for everything from classic two-light setups to more advanced lighting arrangements.

Elinchrom ELC Pro HD 1000 To Go Set

Fast recycling keeps up with your shoot

The ELC Pro HD 1000 recycles in as little as 1.2 seconds at full power and 0.054 seconds at minimum power.

That means less waiting between exposures and more freedom to follow the pace of your subject. For portraits, fashion and movement in particular, fast recycling makes it easier to capture the right moment.

Short flash duration for sharp images of movement

When photographing movement in the studio, flash duration plays an important role in how effectively you can freeze the subject.

The ELC Pro HD 1000 achieves a flash duration as short as 1/5260 second at 80 Ws. This gives you the tools to capture sharp images of dance, fashion, action and other fast-moving subjects.

8-stop power range for greater control

The ELC Pro HD 1000 combines high maximum power with a wide power range. You can move from powerful lighting setups to much lower output levels without changing flash units.

Work at lower power when you want to use a wider aperture and shallow depth of field, or use the higher output with large light modifiers or when lighting a bigger area. Power can be adjusted precisely in 1/10-stop increments.

Consistent light throughout long shoots

Fast recycling and high power need to be matched by stability. The ELC Pro HD 1000 is designed to maintain consistent exposure and colour temperature, even during long sessions and fast-paced shooting.

This helps deliver more uniform results from one frame to the next during product photography, portrait series and commercial productions.

Clear, fast controls

The ELC Pro HD 1000 is designed to make advanced functions straightforward to use. The display presents settings and values clearly, while direct controls let you adjust the flash quickly during a shoot.

You can save four personal presets, making it easy to return to frequently used lighting setups or switch between different shooting situations.

Elinchrom ELC Pro HD display and controls

200 W modelling light

The 200 W modelling light helps you assess the direction, shadows and character of the light before taking a photograph. It can be set proportionally to flash power, adjusted independently or switched off.

The VFC function can also use the modelling light to indicate when the flash has fully recycled.

Please note: Use only modelling lamp EL-23034 with the ELC Pro HD. Similar lamps may have specifications that are unsuitable for the ELC Pro HD.

Elinchrom ELC Pro HD modelling light

Multivoltage for work in different locations

The ELC Pro HD automatically adapts to an input voltage between 90 and 265 V. This makes it useful for photographers working internationally or moving their equipment between studios and locations.

Wireless control with Elinchrom Skyport

The ELC Pro HD has built-in Elinchrom Skyport. With the included Skyport Transmitter Plus, you can trigger the flash units and adjust their power wirelessly from the camera.

The system has a range of approximately 60 metres indoors and up to approximately 200 metres outdoors, giving you room to work in larger studios and on more extensive shoots.

You can also add a Skyport Plus HS for extended control.

Elinchrom Skyport wireless control

Control your flash units from a computer or iOS device

With Elinchrom Bridge, compatible ELC Pro HD units can be controlled from a computer or iOS device. Elinchrom Studio and the Elinchrom App let you monitor and adjust flash functions from one place.

This is especially useful for larger lighting setups where several flash units need adjusting during a shoot.

Elinchrom Bridge for wireless control

Eye-Cell for working with other flash units

The intelligent Eye-Cell optical slave can detect a camera flash sequence and adjust its triggering accordingly. This lets you use the ELC Pro HD alongside speedlights and other flash systems when a shoot calls for different light sources.

Creative functions for advanced lighting setups

The ELC Pro HD offers several functions that give you more control over when and how the flash fires.

  • Delay – adds an adjustable delay so you can determine when the flash fires during an exposure.
  • Sequence – lets you combine up to 20 flash units for rapid image sequences. The units can fire in succession to distribute the workload between them.
  • Strobo – fires multiple flashes during a single exposure, allowing you to capture several phases of movement in one image.

Elinchrom ELC Pro HD creative flash functions

Efficient cooling for long sessions

The built-in microprocessor-controlled fan adjusts its speed to the flash unit’s workload. It provides effective cooling as the pace increases while keeping noise down when full cooling capacity is not needed.

The ELC Pro HD is designed for the long sessions and high shooting volumes that professional studio photography can involve.

An established range of light modifiers

The ELC Pro HD uses Elinchrom’s established accessory mount and can be combined with a wide range of reflectors, umbrellas and Rotalux softboxes.

This lets you adapt the character of the light to your subject and expand your setup as your needs change.

Elinchrom Rotalux 50x130cm Stripbox
topseller-icon.png
EL-26645

The Elinchrom Rotalux Stripbox 50x130 cm is a professional softbox designed for photographers seeking opportunities to control the light flow with precision. Its strip shape allows for focused and directional lighting, which is perfect for highlighting details in portraits, still life and product photography. It is highly favored for creating edge lighting, also known as rim light.

  • Precision Lighting Control
  • Superior Build Quality
  • Compatibility to most flash brands
  • Enhanced Portability
  • Optimal Light Diffusion

Elinchrom Rotalux

Elinchrom's Rotalux system is probably the most imitated softbox design in the world due to its simple and clever construction. It's easy to replicate the design, but much harder to replicate the quality, which sets Elinchrom Rotalux apart.

Extremely Even Light Distribution

Just like all of Elinchrom's lighting tools, the geometry of Rotalux softboxes is precisely tailored to the focal length and light pattern of all Elinchrom studio flash units. These characteristics, along with double diffusion panels, provide the exceptionally even light that Elinchrom softboxes are known for.

Elinchrom Rotalux Stripbox 50x130 cm

Rotalux Speedring (sold separately)

The heart of Rotalux softboxes is the patented Rotalux mounting system, which allows the softbox to be rotated within the holder. Rotalux Speedrings are designed to make both assembly and use extremely easy.
They can be quickly and easily folded like an umbrella for transport in a compact bag. The Rotalux Speedring is (not included) compatible with most flash brands on the market, allowing the softboxes to be mounted directly on other flash brands without any additional adapters. All of Rotalux's unique features are retained.

Elinchrom Rotalux Speedring

Abundant Options for Varying Light Characteristics

Both outer and inner diffusion panels are included as standard. Simply by removing one or two diffusion panels, the character of the light changes.
Optional accessories are available to further modify the light and provide photographers with increased creative freedom.

Deflector Set

Thanks to the centrally positioned umbrella holder on Elinchrom, Rotalux softboxes can be combined with Deflectors. The different materials in the deflector set create various light characteristics and can be used in combination with diffusion panels or, if a harder light is desired, in a softbox without diffusion panels.

Rotagrid Raster

By complementing the softbox with a Rotagrid raster, light flow can be controlled with high precision while retaining the softbox's soft light pattern.
This is a very popular accessory among portrait photographers who want to accentuate parts of the subject while toning down less important areas in the image.
