When I first got my Elinchrom ELB 1200, it was of course the obvious benefits of the flash that made me fall head over heels. So much light in a flash I can take with me everywhere is like a dream! Suddenly, shooting in bright sunlight was no longer a problem. Messy environments I could now easily "darken away" by underexposing the background. That the modelling light at ELB 1200 is a adjustable LED light didn't I notice so much at first but it turned out to be something I had great benefit from!
Elinchrom has LED modelling lights on several of its models today, which give the flash extended range of use. I photograph a lot of newborns in my studio and quite often there are requests to get pictures when the baby is asleep. If they are under two weeks old, there are usually no problems at all. Such small babies are quite easy to fall asleep and once they are asleep, it can basically detonate a bomb nearby without them waking up. If they are a little older, however, I often have problems with them being more easily aroused and that they are disturbed by my flash light.
I have tried using window lights instead and it often worked well. The problem with daylight is that there is not always enough light and that I was very limited to what times of day I could book this type of photography. In winter, it was not entirely certain that it would even get light enough at some point during the day. Therefore, I got the idea to test the LED light on one of my Elinchrom flashes for my lighting. In this way I got a light source I could regulate myself and in addition I could use all my usual light formers to easily control the light.
Incredibly easy to work with if you ask me!
So now I use my ELB 1200 all the time in the studio. Both as an extra flash and for most of my newborn photography.
And the babies, they sleep like logs!
