All glass surfaces reflect parts of the light and prevent it from penetrating. An untreated glass reflects about 8-9% and lets through about 91-92%. Another side effect with an untreated glass surface is that reflections are created between the different glass surfaces, which gives blur and loss of contrast. Filters from B + W have anti-reflective coating on all lens surfaces (some exceptions are available as IR filters, trick filters and the like). The anti-reflective treatment halves the light loss, which means that about 97-98% of the light penetrates and that the sharpness and contrast are maintained. On several filter types, a multi-layer anti-reflective coating is also available as an option. These filters are marked with MRC (Multi Resistant Coating), a coating consisting of several layers of anti-reflection coating and a "top layer" that is extra resistant to dirt and water drops, etc. The MRC coating increases the light transmission to about 99%!
When the light hits the untreated lens surfaces, about 8-9% is reflected back and about 91-92% penetrates
With B + W's unique multilayer anti - reflection coating, light reflection is significantly reduced and as much as 99% of the light penetrates the filter.
The diagram below shows the percentage of light that is reflected by the front / rear lens surface without anti-reflection coating, with single-layer coating and with MRC coating.
The outer layer consists of B+W unique MRC coating which has a very hard surface that is extra resistant to scratches, dirt and moisture. Then comes several layers of anti-glare coating that almost completely eliminates light loss
Thanks to the hard surface of an MRC filter, water droplets do not stick easily to the surface.
The left part of the filter has a traditional coating, the right part MRC coating.
MRC Nano is a new type of anti-reflective coating with an extra "tight" top seal. On top of the 7 layers of anti-reflective coating, on both glass surfaces, B + W has laid a super hard surface which, thanks to nanotechnology, is very dense and resistant to soiling and wet. This means that all XS-Pro MRC Nano filters are easy to clean when needed and that water drops / mist do not get attached.
For more than 90 years, B+W filters have been synonymous with quality and innovation. B+W has succeeded in establishing itself as one of the world‘s leading filter manufacturers. It has, for example, made decisive progress in surface coating. B+W is the first filter manufacturer in the world to offer MRC (Multi Resistant Coating). MRC nano coating is the most innovative development in thin-layer technology. The world-famous Käsemann type polarizing filter with its outstanding quality has been produced by B+W since 1989.
