Photographer Therese Asplund belongs to the top elite among Sweden's portrait photographers and has an outstanding sense of light setting and creativity.
In addition to being an exceptionally skilled photographer, Therese is very good at sharing her knowledge and energy through photography courses, workshops and lectures. See link below.
Here's a little insight into how a Swedish Championship winning image is created.
Therese alternates her photo assignments with her own projects where the inspiration often comes from events and environments around her as well as from other talented photographers around the world. Seeing an interesting picture and figuring out how the photographer went about it is both interesting and educational.
The image Empowered was created by Therese with the intention of competing in photo competitions and to challenge herself, she wanted to work with hard light instead of the soft light she usually uses in her productions and assignments. A sharp silhouette with a bright red background that contrasts with the black.
As always when Therese works, you are impressed by her ability to find clever solutions that visualize her ideas and inspirations. In order to create the original headdress, paper plates were used which were attached to a tiara. The construction was light and stable enough so that talented photo model Alice Vikander could take instructions from Therese and make small adjustments in her position until the photographer was satisfied.
Here comes a really good advise from Therese! To make a colored background really rich and colorful, Therese illuminates the background with gels in the same color as the background. This extra kick of that the color filters add makes the background really shine in the image.
Since the image must have very high contrast and the black must not contain any details, the main light must be heavily shielded. The light should only hit the model's red lips and for this job Therese chose a light shaper with an optical lens that provides a sharp spot light.
The combination with the red light on the red background and the hard main light creates a dramatic contrast.
We are very grateful that Therese generously shared background information on how The image pf the year 2022 was created.
