Complete your studio flash with reflectors and stops that give you full control over your flash light. Highlight a detail in the subject, create an exposed hair light or a dramatic effect on the background.
Although a grid can do wonders for your images, they are perhaps one of the most underrated accessories. They are both cheap and easy to use, photographers who discovered breaks can rarely imagine a life without them!Grids is a light shaper with a honeycomb pattern that is used for lighting both in the studio and outdoors. Elinchrom grids for reflectors are made of metal and are easily mounted on the reflector when you want to have more control and direct the light with precision.
A grid gathers the light to a point with a smooth transition to shadow. This provides minimal light loss where the light hits while allowing you to direct the light in a very precise direction. The nature of the grid is specified in degrees and describes how much the light will be concentrated.
If you want to illuminate something with great precision, use a grid with a lower number of degrees, while a higher number spreads the light over a wider spectrum. 5-10 degrees (narrow) and 30-40 degrees (wide).
Softboxes are one of the most popular forms of light shapers and provides a soft light and great light diffusion. By combining the softbox with grids, you get more control over the light without losing the soft diffused light from the softbox. With increased control and precision, it is easier to create depth in the image and bring out a more dynamic and exciting light.
Grids are popular among creative photographers thanks to the ability to control the light and create beautiful effects, including by highlighting or hiding details.
In this comparison Elinchrom Reflektor-Grid Set 18 cm 12°,20°,30° was used. The first picture shows lighting with a reflector without breaks, the reflector has approx. 70° light spread. The other images show the result from reflector with grids 30°, 20° and 12° light speed.
The light source is approximately 2.5 m in front of the model and the background is 2.5 m behind the model. The goal was to have a setup so that the difference in the light is clearly visible on both model and background.

Here are two examples of how grids can be used for portrait photography.
Interesting lighting where only one light source was used with a Silver/White reflector as a complement.
The following equipment was used for this setup:
This setup gives a light similar to sunlight by placing the studio flash with slits diagonally behind the subject and high up (like a hair light) and a reflector directly in front of the subject. Aim the light so it hits the top of the model's head and bounces off the reflective screen (also place the reflective screen relatively high). This lighting works with different grid densities, 30°, 20° or 12°. Try it out and choose the one that suits you best.
For this set-up, four studio flashes with different types of reflectors with grids and a Silver/White reflector are used.
A studio flash with a 70cm Beauty Dish (Softlite) reflector and grid placed diagonally in front of / just above the model's head, is used as the main light. To lighten the face, a reflective screen is placed low in front of the model which reflects the light from a second studio flash which, thanks to the reflector with grids, only hits the reflective screen without stray light hitting the model.
To free the model from the background, a studio flash with a reflector/grid is placed aimed at the model's hair. In addition, another studio flash with a reflector/grid is aimed at the background to create a vignetting effect.
